THE GREEN SNAKE AND THE BEAUTIFUL LILY

A Fairy Tale

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

Illustrated by Hermann Linde

The Green Snake and the Beautiful Lily is one of the most important stories of the Anthroposophic and Rosicrucian streams. It is a timeless, allegorical tale of initiation and had a profound impact on Rudolf Steiner and on the formulation of his teachings. He called the fairy tale a kind of "secret revelation," an "apocalypse." As the authors point out in The Time Is At Hand! Goethe's fairy tale begins with a specific image: a river separating two lands that contrast to each other, as do the sensory world and the spiritual world. The story ends with a bridge, created through sacrifice, that spans the river between the two lands.

IN BLUE MOUNTAINS

An Artist's Return to America's First Wilderness

Thomas Locker

In Blue Mountains is about the love of nature and the importance of beauty. It tells the story of an artist who sets out to explore wilderness and discovers a new way of seeing. At first, he is bewildered by the profusion of nature - there are so many leaves, he could never paint them all! Gradually, he learns to see its wholeness and to trust his feelings. As he does so, he embarks on an adventure of learning: about light and shadow, the way colour changes through the day, and how looking at nature leads to a new understanding of himself and the world.

ROSES FOR ISABELLA

Diana Cohn

Illustrated by Amy Córdova. Afterword by Lynn Lohr

"Isabella, an aspiring writer and daughter of rose-farm workers in Ecuador, relates the story of her family's livelihood. Isabella is very excited because her school will be commemorating "Pachamama" (Mother Earth) with a special assembly that will include original stories and poems. The students begin their assignment, and the teacher is impressed with Isabella's introduction about Ecuador's continual sunshine, which helps the flowers grow so well. Isabella then recounts a time when her parents worked in a rose farm that used insecticides that caused illness and strong headaches, especially for her mother. Healthier and happier days occurred when her parents began work in a new rose farm that practices fair trade and grows roses organically. Isabella's writing continues with basic section headings to explain the concept of fair trade, how the roses are sold around the world, and why celebrating Ecuador's Pachamama is important. Her composition parallels her overall narration that's distinguished by a standard typeface opposite the child-oriented look of her written story. Colourful folk-art-style drawings in marker and gouache add an authenticity to this South American tale. Unfortunately, the important message about environmental concerns and equitable working conditions dominates, leaving little story for children to latch onto." - Kirkus

TALKING EAGLE AND THE LADY OF ROSES

The Story of Juan Diego and Our Lady of Guadalupe

Illustrated and Written by Amy Córdova

with Eugene Gollogly

"Talking Eagle, an Aztec peasant who had converted to Christianity and been renamed Juan Diego, is approached by Mother Mary and asked to build a church on the top of Tepeyac hill. When Juan takes the request to Bishop Zumárraga, he is denied until he can bring proof. Mary provides roses during the middle of winter, and when they are brought to the bishop, the image of Mother Mary also appears imprinted on Juan's "tilma" or cloak. With that proof, a church is built on the site. Readers familiar with the story through oral renditions will enjoy this religious tale as it unfolds, and details help the story flow. The dark-hued folk-art drawings depict Juan and the Lady of Roses with Mexican flare. End pages provide more information regarding the history, Lady Guadalupe, Juan's "tilma" and current celebrations. Children who already know the story will enjoy the depth and the rich art provided here; those unfamiliar with the legend should also appreciate it." - School Library Journal

No one expected that the barn would become his new home, but it did.

THREE GRIMMS' FAIRY TALES

Paintings by Gerard Wagner

Afterword by Peter Stebbing

The Brothers Grimm

The illustrations in Three Grimms' Fairy Tales by the German painter Gerard Wagner for "Briar Rose"; "Jorinde and Joringle"; and "The Star-Taler" represent a unique artistic approach to children's book illustration. Through Wagner's life-long investigation into how form can arise from objective color experience, the images are attuned individually in a deep way to the mood of each fairy tale and to children's essential moral nature and creative fantasy. The book is a finely illustrated children's book as well as a book of fine art.

THE WISE ENCHANTER

A Journey through the Alphabet

Shelley Davidow

Illustrated by Krystyna Emilia Kurzyca

"But you have found your way to the Enchanted Islands," said the hermit. "That is the first step, and that is good. I can't tell you which way to go, since I have no idea. You see, very few people have ever reached the castle itself, and no one has been there since I have been here, but I can tell you one thing?if you keep going straight through the forest, it will end. At the end, there are two paths. One path is the Right Way. The other is the Left Way. One of these paths is the true way, and will take you where you need to go; but you can only know which is which once you have gone along the way of your choice for some time."
